Bal huwa qur’anun majeed. Fee lawhin mahfooth.

“But this is an honored Qur’an (21) [Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate. (22).”

Surah Al-Buruj: 85:21-22

The Quran Revelation Date Was Ramadan 610 CE in the Cave of Hira

The Quran revelation date is established without any scholarly dispute. Allah states it directly:

“شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ”

Shahru ramadana alladhee unzila feehi al-qur’anu hudan linnas.

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people.”

Surah Al-Baqarah: 2:185

Iqra’ bismi rabbika alladhee khalaq. Khalaqa al-insana min ‘alaq. Iqra’ wa rabbuka al-akram. Alladhee ‘allama bil-qalam. ‘Allama al-insana ma lam ya’lam.

“Recite in the name of your Lord who created – (1) Created man from a clinging substance. (2) Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous – (3) Who taught by the pen – (4) Taught man that which he knew not. (5) 

Surah Al-Alaq: 96:1-5

5. The Quran Revelation Timeline Shifted Completely After the Hijrah

When the Prophet (PBUH) migrated to Madinah in 622 CE, the Quran revelation period entered its second major phase. This 10-year Medinan period produced 28 Surahs. An Islamic state now existed, and laws were needed for every dimension of community life.

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) explained this divine wisdom in Sahih al-Bukhari. She stated that the first verses of Quranic revelation spoke of Paradise and Hellfire, until hearts became firm in faith. Only then did rulings on the lawful and unlawful descend.

Wa qala alladhina kafaru lawla nuzzila ‘alayhi al-qur’anu jumlatan wahidah. Kadhalika linuthabbita bihi fu’adaka wa rattalnahu tartila.

“And those who disbelieve say, “Why was the Qur’an not revealed to him all at once?” Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly. (32).”

Surah Al-Furqan: 25:32

The scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah identified four core reasons for the gradual Quran revelation period:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.”

Surah Al-Maidah: 5:3

When this verse of Quranic revelation descended, Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wept. The Prophet (PBUH) asked him why. Umar said: “What makes me weep is that we were in a state of increase in our religion. But when something is perfected, it is then followed by decrease.” The Prophet (PBUH) confirmed: “You have spoken the truth.” Ibn Kathir recorded this exchange in his Tafsir of Surah Al-Maidah.

A Jewish man said to Umar upon hearing this verse: “If this verse had been revealed to us, we would have taken that day as a festival.” Umar replied: “I know exactly when and where it was revealed, and that day was itself a double festival for us: it was a Friday, and it was the Day of Arafah.” This is confirmed in Sahih al-Bukhari.

8. The Preservation of Quranic Revelation After the Prophet’s Passing

The Quran revelation period ended with the Prophet’s passing in 632 CE, but the preservation of that revelation was already fully underway. The companions had memorized vast portions during the Prophet’s own lifetime. He had appointed scribes to record every verse the moment it descended.

The preservation of the Quranic revelation passed through the following stages after the Prophet (PBUH):

• During Abu Bakr’s caliphate (12 AH / 633 CE): As Huffaz began to fall in battle, Abu Bakr ordered the collection of all written portions of the Quranic revelation into a single Mushaf under the supervision of Zayd ibn Thabit.
• During Uthman’s caliphate (24-25 AH / 644-645 CE): As the Muslim world expanded and recitation differences appeared, Uthman standardized a master copy of the Quranic revelation and distributed it to the major cities, with all other copies unified under this standard.
